About Trecastagni

Trecastagni

Trecastagni sits on the eastern slope of Mount Etna at roughly 580 metres above sea level, inside the Parco dell'Etna in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. The town takes its name from three chestnut trees that once marked the site. Its position on the volcano's flank gives it sharp views across the Ionian Sea toward Catania, about 20 km to the south. The local church of Sant'Alfio, Filadelfo e Cirino — three martyred brothers venerated here — draws pilgrims each May for one of Sicily's oldest barefoot processions, dating to at least the 18th century.

Most visitors arrive as part of a wider Etna circuit. The town connects easily to the lava-trail villages of Zafferana Etnea and Viagrande along the SP2/i provincial road. Local restaurants serve pasta alla Norma and Etna DOC wines from nerello mascalese grapes grown on volcanic soil at 400–900 m elevation. Walking trails into the Parco dell'Etna start within a few kilometres of the town centre.

Trecastagni has a small accommodation base; many travellers stay here to avoid Catania's traffic while keeping access to Etna's eastern craters and the Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway, whose nearest stop is in neighbouring Viagrande, roughly 4 km away.
