Gravina di Catania sits on the lower slopes of Mount Etna, roughly 8 kilometres northwest of central Catania in the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. The town developed significantly during the 20th century as a residential extension of Catania, and today its lava-stone streets border protected Etna Park territory to the north. That position gives visitors a quieter base than the Catanian centre while keeping both the volcano and the coast within easy reach.

Most guests arrive to combine Etna excursions with Catania's Baroque architecture — UNESCO-listed since 2002 — and the fish market at Piazza Carlo Alberto. Gravina itself is walkable at its core, with a handful of neighbourhood trattorias serving pasta alla Norma and grilled swordfish typical of eastern Sicily. The SS121 road connects the town directly to Catania's Fontanarossa Airport in under 20 minutes by car.

The Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway, operating since 1895, has a stop near the Catania–Gravina boundary and circles the full Etna massif — useful for travellers without a car.
