Catania sits at the foot of Mount Etna on Sicily's eastern coast, 70 km south of Messina. The city was largely rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake that leveled much of eastern Sicily — the reconstruction produced a compact Baroque center now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lava stone gives the architecture its distinctive dark gray tone, visible in the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, Piazza del Duomo, and the Teatro Massimo Bellini, named after the composer Vincenzo Bellini, who was born here in 1801.

Visitors arrive for the Baroque streetscape, the fish market La Pescheria — one of the largest and oldest in Sicily — and access to Etna, an active stratovolcano reachable in under an hour by car or the Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway. The city also draws food travelers: Catania is the origin of arancini, pasta alla Norma, and granita served with brioche. The port connects ferry routes to Malta and mainland Italy.

Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) handles direct flights from major European cities and sits 5 km from the city center. The historic center is compact and walkable; most key sites fall within a 1.5 km radius of Piazza del Duomo.
