Casa Contovello

Twelve kilometres above Trieste's waterfront, Casa Contovello occupies the hilltop hamlet of Contovello on the Carso plateau, where limestone terrain and open scrubland replace the city's baroque port streets. At roughly 200 metres elevation, the position trades urban noise for panoramic views across the Gulf of Trieste toward the Slovenian coast.

Contovello itself is a working Carso village, one of the few places in this corner of Italy where osmize — seasonal farmhouse wine bars authorised to sell local Terrano and Vitovska directly — open their doors to passing guests. The surrounding plateau is cross-crossed by trails connecting to the Rilke Path above Duino, a walk of under two hours.
