Chatan is a coastal town on the west side of Okinawa's main island, roughly 15 km north of Naha. It sits between the East China Sea and the dense urban corridor of central Okinawa, giving it a character shaped equally by Japanese culture and a long American military presence. The Mihama America Village district — built on reclaimed land in the 1990s — anchors the town's identity: a compact zone of pastel-painted shopping blocks, ferris wheel, and beachside restaurants that draws day-trippers from across the island.
Visitors come for the beaches and the water. Araha Beach and Sunset Beach are both managed, free-entry strands with calm, shallow water suited to families and snorkelers. The offshore reef systems attract recreational divers year-round, and several dive operators based in Chatan run two-tank boat trips to sites around the Kerama Islands. The town also pulls a steady stream of surfers — the reef breaks off Sunabe Seawall are among Okinawa's most consistent, working best in autumn typhoon swells.
Chatan has no Shinkansen stop; the nearest rail access is Naha's Yui Rail monorail, from which buses cover the remaining distance in about 40 minutes. Route 58 runs the length of the town's coastline and is the main artery for both local buses and rental cars. Most hotels and guesthouses cluster within walking distance of Mihama or the seafront.
