Ginowan sits at the geographic center of Okinawa's main island, roughly 10 km south of Naha. The city is defined by its coastline along the East China Sea and by the presence of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma — a U.S. military base that occupies a significant portion of the urban core and has shaped Ginowan's politics and economy for decades. Gate-2 Street, running along the base perimeter, is lined with international restaurants, bars, and shops that give the city a distinct cross-cultural character unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Visitors come primarily for the Okinawa Convention Center, a large facility hosting trade shows, concerts, and cultural events year-round. The adjacent Ginowan Tropical Beach draws swimmers and outrigger canoe enthusiasts from spring through autumn. The Okinawa International Carnival, held annually in August, brings crowds from across the island. History-focused travelers stop at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum — actually located in nearby Naha — but Ginowan itself holds smaller community museums documenting prewar Ryukyuan village life.

Ginowan is served by the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) via connections from Naha; most visitors travel by rental car or bus from Naha Airport, roughly 20–25 minutes by expressway. The city has no dedicated tourist district — accommodation ranges from business hotels near Route 58 to smaller guesthouses close to the beach.
