About Furano
Furano: Hokkaido's Lavender Valley and Ski Heartland
Furano sits in the geographic centre of Hokkaido, roughly 90 km southeast of Sapporo, flanked by the Tokachi Mountains to the east and the Daisetsuzan National Park range to the north. The city is defined by two distinct seasons of tourism. From late June through August, the Farm Tomita lavender fields — planted commercially since 1958 — draw visitors across rolling purple rows that have appeared on Japanese postage stamps. Melon farms and wine production from the local Furano Winery add agricultural depth to the summer itinerary.
Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters around two nodes: Furano Station in the city centre, where mid-range business hotels and ryokan line the main streets, and the Kitanomine ski base, 4 km north, where slope-side lodges fill from December through March. The Furano Ski Resort hosted Alpine World Cup events and offers 23 runs across 976 metres of vertical drop — a draw for skiers from across East Asia.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: JR Furano Line runs from Asahikawa (about 1 hour 20 minutes); rent a car in Asahikawa for easier access to farm roads.
- Lavender timing: Peak bloom typically falls in the second and third weeks of July.
- Winter gear: Pack thermal layers — January averages −10 °C and snowfall is heavy.
- Currency: Most rural farm shops and small ryokan accept cash only.
