Sounkyo Kankou Hotel

An onsen ryokan set deep inside Sounkyo Gorge, one of Hokkaido's most dramatic river canyons, the Sounkyo Kankou Hotel positions guests within walking distance of the gorge's Ryusei and Ginga waterfalls and the summer cable car to Kurodake peak.

Bathing options include indoor public baths, an open-air rotenburo facing the canyon walls, and a sauna — all fed by the local sulfur springs. Rooms follow a traditional tatami layout with slippers, yukata, and mountain-facing windows. The on-site restaurant serves kaiseki-style meals drawing on Hokkaido seafood and Daisetsuzan produce.

Sounkyo Onsen village sits roughly 130km east of Asahikawa, reached by direct bus. Winter ice festival illuminations run January through March directly outside the hotel.
