About Kushiro
Kushiro: Gateway to Japan's Largest Wetland
Kushiro sits on the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido, roughly 330 km east of Sapporo. The city is the primary access point for Kushiro-Shitsugen National Park, Japan's largest wetland at approximately 28,788 hectares. The marsh supports the largest wild population of the red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis), a species that numbers around 1,800 birds in Hokkaido today. Observation platforms at Hosooka and Kottaro give unobstructed views across the reed beds year-round.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate near Kushiro Station and along Nusamai Bridge, a 124-metre span completed in 1928 and considered one of Japan's three most scenic bridges. The fishing port district offers a cluster of mid-range business hotels within walking distance of the Washo Market, where vendors have sold fresh seafood since the 1950s. Budget and mid-range options dominate the supply; ryokan-style stays are limited but available on the city's eastern edge.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Fly into Kushiro Airport (KUH), 24 km northwest of the city; buses connect in about 45 minutes. The JR Hanasaki Line links Kushiro to Sapporo via Obihiro.
- Best season: Winter (January–February) draws wildlife photographers for crane dancing displays against snow; summers are cool and frequently foggy.
- Currency: Cash is preferred at the Washo Market and smaller restaurants; ATMs at convenience stores accept international cards.
