About Shari
Shari: Gateway to Shiretoko's Wild Northeast
Shari is a small town in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, sitting at the base of the Shiretoko Peninsula — a UNESCO World Heritage Site designated in 2005. The peninsula stretches 70 km into the Sea of Okhotsk and shelters brown bears, Steller's sea eagles, and one of Japan's last roadless wilderness zones. Shari itself is the nearest rail terminus to Shiretoko, making it the practical launchpoint for travellers entering the protected area.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses cluster along National Route 334 between Shari Station and Utoro, the main resort village 25 km to the northeast on the peninsula's western coast. Utoro sits below the Shiretoko Five Lakes trail system and the cliffs of Oshinkoshin Falls. A smaller cluster of lodgings operates near Rausu on the eastern coast, popular for drift-ice cruises in February and March.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: The JR Senmo Line connects Shari to Kushiro (about 2.5 hours) and Abashiri (45 minutes); reserve seats on busy summer weekends.
- Season: Shiretoko roads to the Five Lakes open mid-April; the Shiretoko Nature Cruise from Utoro runs May through November.
- Bear safety: Register with the Shiretoko Nature Centre before entering forested trails; regulations change seasonally.
- Winter access: Utoro is accessible year-round, but the road beyond Shiretoko Pass closes from November to late April.
