Shiretoko Village

Five minutes on foot from the Utoro harbour, Shiretoko Village sits at the edge of the UNESCO-listed Shiretoko Peninsula, where brown bears roam the coastal forest and drift ice crowds the shore each February. The ryokan's hot spring and open-air bath draw water from local onsen sources — a practical reason to return after a day on the peninsula trails.

Rooms share bathroom facilities in traditional ryokan fashion; family rooms accommodate larger groups. The on-site restaurant serves meals suited to the region's calendar, and kids' meals are available — useful given Shiretoko's pull as a wildlife destination for families.

Shari town, with its JR Senmo Line station, sits roughly 25 kilometres south. The Shiretoko Five Lakes trailhead is under 15 kilometres north along Route 334, making this address a functional base for both day walks and longer backcountry excursions.
