About Bear Elephant

Between the Shiretoko mountain ridgeline and the cold-water shore of the Nemuro Strait, Bear Elephant occupies a modest guesthouse position in Rausu — the working fishing port on Shiretoko Peninsula's eastern flank, far quieter than tourist-facing Utoro across the pass.

Rooms are simple but practical: desk, refrigerator, TV, and slippers included. A coffee house on site handles mornings; the shared lounge gives guests a place to swap notes on wildlife sightings. Air purifiers and mosquito nets reflect the hostel's genuine outdoor-traveller focus rather than resort polish.

Rausu is the launch point for winter drift-ice cruises and summer orca watches in the strait. The Shiretoko Pass road, open only May through October, connects to the peninsula's UNESCO core zone in under an hour.
