Yomitan, Okinawa sits 20 km north of Naha with UNESCO castle ruins, traditional pottery kilns, and East China Sea beaches worth exploring.
Yomitan is a village on the west coast of Okinawa Island, Japan, roughly 20 km north of Naha. It sits along the East China Sea and holds more registered cultural properties than any other municipality in Okinawa — a distinction rooted in its dense concentration of gusuku (Ryukyuan castle ruins) and traditional craft workshops. The village is the center of Yachimun pottery, a centuries-old ceramic tradition producing thick, earth-toned ware fired in shared climbing kilns. Yomitan Pottery Village, a cooperative of independent kilns near Zakimi Castle, draws buyers and collectors throughout the year.
Visitors come for a mix of history and craft. Zakimi Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed in 2000 as part of the Gusuku Sites of the Ryukyu Kingdom — offers well-preserved stone arches and panoramic coastal views. Beaches along the village's western edge, including Toguchi Beach, attract snorkelers and divers from spring through autumn. The village also hosts the Yomitan Pottery Fair each autumn, when kilns open to the public and prices are typically lower than retail.
Yomitan has no train station; access from Naha is by expressway bus or rental car, taking approximately 40–50 minutes. The village operates a community bus, but schedules are limited. Most accommodation options are small guesthouses and resort hotels along the coast.
