About Petropavlovsk-Kamtchatski

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky: Gateway to Russia's Volcanic Far East

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky sits on the western shore of Avacha Bay, roughly 6,800 km east of Moscow on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Founded in 1740 by Vitus Bering's Second Kamchatka Expedition, it is one of the oldest settlements on Russia's Pacific coast and home to approximately 180,000 residents. The city faces two active stratovolcanoes — Avachinsky (2,741 m) and Koryaksky (3,456 m) — visible from the central waterfront on clear days. The Valley of Geysers, a UNESCO-listed site, lies roughly 180 km northeast by helicopter.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels cluster along Lenina Avenue and near the Avacha Bay embankment, placing guests within walking distance of the fish market and the memorial ship C-56. The city has no rail connection; Yelizovo Airport (PKC) handles flights from Moscow, Vladivostok, and select Asian hubs, sitting 30 km north of the city centre. Shuttle buses and taxis cover the airport transfer in roughly 40 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: July–September for hiking and wildlife; winters are long and snowbound.
  • Visa note: Foreign visitors require a Russian visa; some nationalities qualify for e-visa to the Far Eastern Federal District.
  • Currency: Russian ruble (RUB); card acceptance is limited outside central hotels.
  • Bear safety: Guided tours are standard for backcountry excursions — solo hiking is discouraged.
