About Pristina
Pristina: Kosovo's Young Capital Between Bazaar and Boulevard
Pristina became the capital of Europe's newest state when Kosovo declared independence in February 2008. The city of roughly 220,000 sits on the Kosovo Plain at about 652 metres elevation, flanked by the Gërmia hills to the northeast. Its central axis runs from the Newborn monument — repainted each independence anniversary — down Bill Clinton Boulevard, where a 3-metre statue of the former U.S. president marks American support during the 1999 NATO intervention. The National Library of Kosovo, completed in 1982, is one of the most discussed Brutalist buildings in the Balkans, its 99 domes drawing architects and photographers.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster along Nëna Terezë Street and around Mother Teresa Square, the pedestrian core. The Dragodan neighbourhood, a short walk uphill, hosts several boutique guesthouses popular with NGO workers and diplomats. Budget travellers find hostels near the Old Bazaar (Çarshia e Vjetër), whose textile and copper shops date back to Ottoman-era trade routes.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Kosovo uses the Euro (€) despite not being an EU member.
- Entry: Most EU and U.S. passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days.
- Transport: Pristina International Airport Adem Jashari lies 18 km southwest; taxis to the centre cost roughly €20.
- Altitude: Pack a layer — evenings cool noticeably above 600 m even in summer.
