About Prizren

Prizren: Kosovo's Ottoman Old Town on the Bistrica River

Prizren sits in southern Kosovo, 75 km south of Pristina at the foot of the Šar Mountains. The city's medieval core preserves one of the most intact Ottoman streetscapes in the Western Balkans — cobblestone lanes lined with 15th- and 16th-century mosques, hans, and stone bridges. The Stone Bridge (Ura e Gurit), rebuilt in 1777, crosses the Lumbardhi i Prizrenit river at the heart of the old bazaar. Above the rooftops, the Kalaja Fortress dates to Byzantine foundations and frames the skyline from nearly every street below.

Where to Stay in Prizren

Most hotels cluster within walking distance of Shadervan Square, the central plaza where the bazaar begins. The Sinan Pasha Mosque (1615) stands two minutes from the square. Rruga Gjin Gazulli and the lanes off Sasan Quarter hold guesthouses in restored Ottoman-era stone houses. A handful of newer properties near the League of Prizren building — site of the 1878 Albanian national movement — offer mid-range rooms with fortress views.

Practical Tips

  • Currency: Kosovo uses the euro (€) despite not being an EU member.
  • Getting there: Pristina International Airport is roughly 80 km north; shared furgon minibuses run regularly for under €5.
  • Festival timing: DokuFest, an international documentary film festival, fills the city each August — book accommodation several weeks in advance.
  • Language: Albanian is the primary language; Serbian is spoken in some communities.
