About Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng: Karst Peaks and the Nam Song River

Vang Vieng sits in Vientiane Province, roughly 150 km north of the Lao capital along Route 13. The Nam Song River runs along the town's western edge, framed by limestone karst formations that rise sharply from the valley floor. Travelers arrive for tubing, kayaking, and caving — Tham Chang Cave, carved into the cliffs above the river, has been visited since the early 19th century. Hot-air balloon flights at dawn offer an aerial view of the karst panorama that ground-level streets cannot match.

Where to Stay

Most hotels cluster along Rue du Marché and the riverside road facing the Nam Song. Budget guesthouses dominate the center near the old market, while mid-range bungalows with balconies line the quieter northern riverfront. A handful of 3-star resorts operate south of town toward Ban Huay Ngam, set back from the road with pool access and karst views.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Nightly sleeper buses from Vientiane take around 4 hours; the Laos–China Railway stops at Vang Vieng Station, 10 km from the center.
  • Best season: November to February brings dry weather and cooler temperatures; avoid the June–September monsoon for tubing.
  • Currency: Lao Kip is standard; Thai Baht and USD are widely accepted in tourist areas.
  • Entry: A valid Lao visa or visa-on-arrival is required for most nationalities at border crossings.
