About Echternach

Echternach: Luxembourg's Oldest Town on the Sauer

Echternach, founded around 698 AD when the Anglo-Saxon monk Willibrord established his abbey on the banks of the Sauer River, is Luxembourg's oldest town. The Abbey of Echternach — rebuilt in the 18th century after earlier destruction — anchors the compact historic centre and houses the crypt containing Willibrord's tomb, still drawing pilgrims. The town sits 36 km northeast of Luxembourg City, directly on the German border, making it equally accessible from Trier (30 km north) and the Mullerthal Trail trailheads that begin at the town edge.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels cluster within walking distance of the marketplace and the abbey. The town serves as the primary base for hikers exploring the Little Switzerland sandstone gorges of the Mullerthal region. Visitors arrive for the Springprozession (Dancing Procession), held each Whit Tuesday — a UNESCO-listed tradition since 2010 in which participants hop-step through the streets to the Willibrord basilica. The surrounding lake, Lac d'Echternach, offers swimming and cycling 1 km south of the centre.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Bus 111 runs from Luxembourg City's main station; journey time around 55 minutes.
  • Season: May draws the largest crowds for the Dancing Procession; September offers cooler hiking conditions.
  • Border access: German town of Echternach-Irrel lies across the Sauer bridge — day-trippers cross on foot.
