About Macau

Macau: Where Portuguese Colonial History Meets the Pearl River Delta

Macau sits on a peninsula and two islands at the mouth of the Pearl River, 65 km southwest of Hong Kong and linked to mainland China at the Cotai land border. Portuguese traders arrived in 1557, making Macau the oldest European settlement in East Asia. That four-century presence left behind St. Paul's Ruins (façade dating to 1602), the Largo do Senado mosaic square, and a cuisine — African chicken, egg tarts, bacalhau — found nowhere else in Asia. UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Macau in 2005, covering 25 monuments across the peninsula.

Where to Stay in Macau

Hotels cluster in two zones. The Macau Peninsula holds colonial-era streets, street-food lanes in Rua da Felicidade, and the Inner Harbour waterfront — suited to history-focused visitors. Cotai, the reclaimed strip between Taipa and Coloane, hosts large integrated resorts and is the main casino district. Taipa Village offers a quieter alternative, with Portuguese tile houses and weekend markets.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Ferries from Hong Kong's Tuen Mun and Sheung Wan terminals run every 15–30 minutes; journey time approximately one hour.
  • Currency: Macanese Pataca (MOP); Hong Kong dollars accepted at par in most venues.
  • Size: The territory covers 32.9 km² — most sites are walkable or reachable by free casino shuttle.
