About Lilongwe
Lilongwe: Malawi's Garden Capital
Lilongwe became Malawi's capital in 1975, replacing Zomba under President Hastings Banda's administration. The city divides into two distinct zones: the modern City Centre (Area 3), built around government ministries and the Reserve Bank of Malawi, and the older Old Town market district roughly 5 km to the south along Kamuzu Procession Road. This split personality sets Lilongwe apart from most African capitals — no single downtown core, but two functional hubs connected by minibus taxis.
Where to Stay in Lilongwe
Hotels cluster in three zones. Area 43 hosts mid-range guesthouses and is close to the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, a rehabilitation sanctuary on 23 hectares within the city limits. Area 9 offers quieter lodges popular with NGO workers and diplomatic staff. The Old Town suits budget travellers who need fast access to Lilongwe Market and cross-border bus terminals to Lusaka and Dar es Salaam.
