About Hulhumale
Hulhumale: Reclaimed Island on the Edge of Malé Atoll
Hulhumale is an artificial island built on reclaimed land in North Malé Atoll, roughly 10 km north of the Maldivian capital. Construction began in the late 1990s and Phase 1 opened around 2004, creating a planned urban extension to relieve pressure on overcrowded Malé. The Sinamalé Bridge — opened in September 2018 at 2.1 km — now links Hulhumale directly to Malé and to Velana International Airport, making road transfer possible for the first time in the country's history.
Where to Stay and What to Expect
Hotels in Hulhumale fill the gap between Malé guesthouses and remote resort islands. The Central Park district and the Phase 2 seafront concentrate most mid-range and budget properties, all within a short taxi ride of the airport. Travelers on early or late resort transfers frequently use Hulhumale as a buffer night. The eastern shoreline offers roughly 2 km of public white-sand beach, accessible year-round without a resort fee.
Practical Tips
- Airport transfer: Velana International Airport is approximately 10 minutes by taxi across the Sinamalé Bridge.
- Currency: Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR); US dollars are widely accepted at hotels.
- Dry season: November to April brings northeast monsoon conditions with minimal rainfall; May–October is wetter.
