About Flic-en-Flac

Flic-en-Flac: Lagoon Town on Mauritius's West Coast

Flic-en-Flac sits on the western shore of Mauritius, roughly 20 km south of Port Louis along the M1 motorway. The name derives from a Dutch phrase meaning "free and flat land," and the town's 8 km of white-sand beach backed by casuarina trees remains its defining feature. The lagoon runs calm and shallow, protected by an offshore reef, keeping water temperatures around 26 °C in summer (November–April). Divers and snorkelers target the Kié wreck and Rempart L'Herbe sites, reachable in under 10 minutes by boat from the beach.

Where to Stay

Hotels range from guesthouses on Royal Road to beachfront resort properties near Wolmar at the northern end of the strip. The village centre clusters supermarkets, restaurants, and a Friday craft market within walking distance of budget apartments and self-catering units. Larger 4-star and 5-star resorts occupy the quieter Wolmar stretch with direct lagoon access.

Practical Tips

  • Season: May–September is drier and cooler; cyclone season runs January–March.
  • Pack accordingly: Reef shoes help on the rocky northern section of the beach.
