About Taxco de Alarcón

Taxco de Alarcón: Colonial Silver Capital of Mexico

Taxco de Alarcón sits in the mountains of Guerrero state, roughly 170 km south of Mexico City at an elevation of 1,800 metres. Spanish colonists founded the settlement in 1529, and silver mining defined it for the next five centuries. The city's signature landmark, Santa Prisca Cathedral, was built between 1751 and 1758 by silver baron José de la Borda — its Churrigueresque facade in rose-cut stone remains one of the finest 18th-century church fronts in Latin America. Cobblestone lanes, white-washed walls, and terracotta-tiled rooftops cascade down the hillside from the cathedral's twin towers, earning the city national monument status in 1928.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster around Plaza Borda, the central zócalo, and along Calle de las Delicias heading toward the Teleférico cable-car station. Boutique posadas occupy colonial mansions within walking distance of the silver market on Plata Street. The city draws craft buyers, architecture enthusiasts, and travellers attending the renowned Semana Santa processions, which fill the narrow streets every spring with candlelit pageantry.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Estrella de Oro and Futura buses run from Mexico City's Terminal Sur in about 2.5 hours.
  • Altitude: Pack a light layer — evenings at 1,800 m are cooler than the lowland forecast suggests.
  • Navigation: The steep cobbled streets are not suitable for large rolling luggage; request porter service when booking.
