About Agadir
Agadir
Agadir sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast, 508 km south of Casablanca. The city was almost entirely rebuilt after a catastrophic earthquake in February 1960 destroyed the original settlement and killed around 15,000 people. That reconstruction produced a low-rise, grid-planned city unlike any other in Morocco — wide boulevards, a modern port, and a 9 km sandy beach that remains the city's defining feature.
Most visitors come for the beach and the reliable sunshine — Agadir averages around 300 sunny days per year. European package tourists dominate in winter, drawn by mild temperatures that rarely drop below 15 °C. Surfers target the breaks at Taghazout, 20 km north, while families use Agadir as a base for day trips to the Souss-Massa National Park, 40 km south, home to the endangered northern bald ibis. The medina near the port is a 1990s reconstruction, built to replace what was lost in 1960.
Agadir–Al Massira Airport (AGA) sits 25 km east of the city centre and receives direct flights from major European hubs including London, Paris, and Amsterdam. The port handles both fishing fleets — Agadir is one of Africa's largest fishing ports — and a growing cruise terminal. The city operates on Western European time (UTC+1 year-round since 2018), which simplifies scheduling for visitors from the EU.
