Meknès earned its place among Morocco's four Imperial Cities under Sultan Moulay Ismail, who ruled from 1672 to 1727 and transformed the city into a monumental royal capital. The Bab Mansour gate, completed in 1732, remains one of the most ornate triumphal arches in North Africa. The medina of Meknès holds UNESCO World Heritage status since 1996, yet sees far fewer visitors than Fès or Marrakech — roughly 55 km to its southeast.
