About Meknès
Meknès: Imperial Capital of the Atlas Foothills
Meknès earned its place among Morocco's four Imperial Cities under Sultan Moulay Ismail, who ruled from 1672 to 1727 and transformed the city into a monumental royal capital. The Bab Mansour gate, completed in 1732, remains one of the most ornate triumphal arches in North Africa. The medina of Meknès holds UNESCO World Heritage status since 1996, yet sees far fewer visitors than Fès or Marrakech — roughly 55 km to its southeast. The Heri es-Swani granaries and Agdal Basin, built to supply Moulay Ismail's 12,000-strong army, still stand intact.
Where to Stay in Meknès
Hotels concentrate near Place el-Hedim, the main square bordering the medina, and along Avenue Hassan II in the French-built ville nouvelle. Riads within the old city walls offer the closest access to Moulay Ismail's Mausoleum and the souks of Nejjarine. The ville nouvelle district suits travelers arriving by rail, as Meknès-Ville station sits a ten-minute walk from most mid-range hotels.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Trains run from Casablanca in roughly 3 hours and from Fès in 45 minutes.
- Base for day trips: Volubilis, a Roman archaeological site, lies 33 km north and is reachable by shared taxi from Bab el-Khemis.
- Currency: Moroccan dirham; most medina guesthouses prefer cash.
- Climate: Summers reach 38 °C; spring and autumn offer cooler walking temperatures.
