About Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt: Rivers State's Oil-Delta Capital

Port Harcourt, founded in 1913 by British colonial administrators and named after Lewis Harcourt, sits at the head of the Bonny River estuary in Rivers State, roughly 65 km from the Atlantic coast. The city grew from a coal-export terminal into Nigeria's petroleum hub after oil was struck in the Niger Delta in 1956. Today it ranks among Nigeria's four largest cities, with a metropolitan population exceeding 2 million. The Trans-Amadi industrial district and GRA (Government Reserved Area) Phases 1–3 define the city's economic and residential core, while Mile 1 Market and Mile 3 Market anchor daily commerce.

Where to Stay in Port Harcourt

Hotels concentrate along Aba Road, Peter Odili Road, and inside the GRA, where mid-range and business-class properties are a short drive from the Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC) in Omagwa, about 25 km north of the city centre. The Rumuola and Rumuibekwe neighborhoods offer quieter lodging options closer to the university district.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Shared taxis and okadas (motorcycle taxis) cover most routes; ride-hailing apps operate citywide.
  • Currency: Transactions use the Nigerian Naira (NGN); ATMs on Aba Road accept international cards.
  • Climate: Two rainy seasons peak April–July and September–October; the dry Harmattan runs November–February.
  • Airport transfer: Allow 45–60 minutes from PHC Airport to GRA during weekday peak hours.
