About Skopje
Skopje: Stone Bridge, Bazaar Quarter, and the 2014 Skyline
Skopje, capital of North Macedonia, sits in the Vardar River valley at 245 metres elevation, roughly 90 km north of Thessaloniki and 330 km south of Belgrade. The city of around 600,000 is defined by two contrasting faces: the Old Bazaar (Čaršija), a continuous Ottoman market district dating to the 12th century, and the controversial Skopje 2014 urban project that filled Macedonia Square with neoclassical statues and colonnaded facades. The Stone Bridge, a 15-arch Ottoman span from 1469, connects both worlds across the Vardar.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along Makedonija Street and around Macedonia Square in the city centre, placing guests within walking distance of the National Museum, the Daut Pasha Hamam (a 15th-century bathhouse turned gallery), and the bazaar lanes of Čaršija. The Kale Fortress crowns the hill immediately north of the Old Bazaar and offers a reference point visible from most central accommodations.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Skopje Alexander the Great Airport sits 21 km east; taxis to the centre take roughly 25 minutes.
- Currency: The Macedonian denar (MKD); most central hotels accept cards but bazaar vendors prefer cash.
- Season: Summers reach 35 °C; April–June and September–October offer milder temperatures for walking the bazaar.
