About Asuncion
Asunción: River Capital on the Left Bank of the Paraguay
Asunción stands on a bay of the Río Paraguay, founded by Spanish colonists on 15 August 1537 — making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South America. The historic centre holds the Palacio de los López (presidential palace, completed 1867), the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes on Plaza de la Democracia, and the Casa de la Independencia, where Paraguayan independence was proclaimed in 1811. The Ciudad Vieja district clusters these monuments within walking distance, its low colonial facades contrasting with the modern glass towers rising along Avenida Mariscal López to the east.
Where to Stay in Asunción
Hotels concentrate in three corridors: the Centro Histórico for visitors focused on monuments and government buildings; Villa Morra, a residential neighbourhood roughly 5 km east of the old city, favoured for its restaurants along Avenida Brasilia; and Carmelitas, close to the Shopping del Sol mall. Business travellers arrive mainly for trade in agriculture and manufacturing — Paraguay is the world's fourth-largest soya exporter — while regional tourists cross from Clorinda, Argentina via the international bridge, a 10-minute drive from the centre.
Practical Tips
- Currency: Paraguayan Guaraní (PYG); ATMs in Villa Morra dispense local currency reliably.
- Airport: Silvio Pettirossi International Airport sits 15 km northeast; taxis take roughly 30 minutes in light traffic.
- Climate: Subtropical — January highs reach 35 °C; pack lightweight clothing and carry water on city walks.
- Language: Spanish and Guaraní are both official; basic Spanish is sufficient for hotel check-in.
