About Cebu City

Cebu City: The Queen City of the South

Cebu City is the Philippines' oldest Spanish settlement, founded by Miguel López de Legazpi in 1565. The Magellan's Cross — planted on arrival of Ferdinand Magellan's fleet in 1521 — still stands in a pavilion on Magallanes Street, metres from Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. These two landmarks draw pilgrims and historians from across Southeast Asia and anchor the Downtown Cebu heritage corridor.

The city anchors Cebu Island's northern coast and serves as the regional hub of the Visayas. Business travellers fill the IT Park district in Lahug, while leisure visitors spread toward Colon Street (the oldest street in the Philippines) and the upscale Ayala Center Cebu mall in Cebu Business Park. The Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January, brings over one million attendees to streets around the basilica.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Metered taxis and app-based rides (Grab) are the fastest options; jeepneys serve fixed routes but run slow in traffic.
  • Airport: Mactan-Cebu International Airport sits on Mactan Island, roughly 12 km east of Downtown; allow 30–45 minutes by road.
  • Climate: Dry season runs December to May; pack light rain gear for shoulder months.
  • Ferry access: Regular fast-craft services connect Cebu City Pier to Bohol, Leyte, and Negros islands.
