About Grodno

Grodno: Old Castles on the Neman River

Grodno (Belarusian: Hrodna) sits on the Neman River in western Belarus, roughly 15 km from the Polish border and 30 km from Lithuania. The city of around 370,000 residents is among Belarus's best-preserved historical centres, largely because it escaped the wholesale industrial redevelopment that reshaped Minsk after World War II. Two castles define the skyline: the Old Hrodna Castle (11th–12th century) and the adjacent New Castle, built in 1734–1751 as a summer residence for Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth kings. Both stand on a bluff above the Neman. The St. Francis Xavier Cathedral (1678–1705) on Savetskaya Ploshcha — one of the finest Baroque churches in the region — anchors the pedestrian core.

Where to Stay

Hotels concentrate near Savetskaya Ploshcha and along Lenina Street, placing guests within walking distance of both castles and the 17th-century Farny Church. A smaller cluster of guesthouses operates in quieter residential streets east of the old city wall. Visitors arriving by rail alight at Grodno Railway Station, roughly 1.5 km south of the Old Town.

Practical Tips

  • Border crossing: The Bruzgi–Kuźnica crossing into Poland lies 15 km south; book onward transport in advance.
  • Currency: Belarusian ruble (BYN); card acceptance is common at city-centre hotels.
  • Visa: Many nationalities enter Belarus visa-free for up to 30 days via Minsk airport; land-border rules differ — confirm current policy before travel.
  • Language: Russian and Belarusian are both official; Polish is understood near the border.
