Hotels in Kraków

The most convenient bases in Kraków are the Old Town (Stare Miasto), within walking distance of Wawel Castle and the Rynek Główny market square; Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, for restaurants and nightlife; and Podgórze, across the Vistula, for a quieter stay near Schindler's Factory. Most visitors stay three to four nights; Kraków Airport is 15 km west, reachable in 30 minutes by train.

Where to Stay

Old Town suits first-time visitors and those prioritising sightseeing: the 14th-century St. Mary's Basilica and the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) are on the doorstep, and hotels range from restored merchant townhouses to modern 4-star properties on the ring road. Kazimierz, 1.5 km south-east of the Rynek, draws travellers who prefer independent cafés, craft-beer bars, and a denser local character; Szeroka Street anchors the neighbourhood's synagogues and kosher restaurants. Podgórze has fewer hotels but lower rates and direct access to the Kraków Ghetto Memorial and Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory museum.

Getting Around

Kraków's tram network covers the city centre; single tickets cost around 4 PLN. The Old Town core is a pedestrian zone. Auschwitz-Birkenau is 70 km west — buses depart regularly from the main bus terminal beside Kraków Główny railway station, journey time roughly 90 minutes.

Practical Tips

• Crowds: Rynek Główny is busiest June–August; book accommodation two to three months ahead for summer weekends.
• Weather: Winters are cold (−5 °C average in January); pack layers if visiting for Christmas markets, which open from late November.
• Currency: Poland uses the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro; card payments are widely accepted.
• Wawel Castle: Timed tickets for the Royal Chambers sell out — reserve online the day before at minimum.
