About Moledo e Cristelo

Moledo e Cristelo: Atlantic Shore Parish of the Minho River Mouth

Moledo e Cristelo is a civil parish in the municipality of Caminha, in the Viana do Castelo district of northern Portugal. Positioned where the Minho River meets the Atlantic, the area is defined by a long sandy beach — Praia de Moledo — backed by pine-covered dunes. The Spanish region of Galicia lies directly across the river, making this one of the few Portuguese coastal spots with an international river border visible from the shore.

Where to Stay

Accommodation here skews toward small guesthouses, rural lodges, and self-catering apartments rather than large hotel blocks. Visitors use Moledo e Cristelo as a quiet base for exploring the Costa Verde and the Caminho Português (Portuguese Way of St. James), which passes through nearby Caminha, roughly 3 km north.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The Linha do Minho train connects Moledo-Caminha station to Viana do Castelo (approx. 30 min) and Porto Campanhã (approx. 1 hr 45 min).
  • Beach season: Water temperatures peak in July–August; Atlantic swells make conditions suitable for surfing in shoulder months.
  • Border crossing: A seasonal ferry links Caminha to A Guarda in Spain during summer months.
