About Paredes de Coura e Resende
Paredes de Coura e Resende
Paredes de Coura and Resende occupy two distinct corners of northern Portugal, linked by the broader landscape of granite hills, river valleys, and Atlantic-influenced agriculture. Paredes de Coura sits in the Minho region of Viana do Castelo district, bordered by the Coura River and close to the Peneda-Gerês corridor. It draws visitors each August for the Vodafone Paredes de Coura festival, running since 1993 at Taboão reservoir beach — one of Portugal's oldest and most respected outdoor music events. The surrounding countryside belongs to Vinho Verde territory, where low-trained vines cover terraced hillsides above fast-running streams.
Resende lies further south in Viseu district, perched above the Douro River between Peso da Régua and Lamego. The municipality falls within the Douro DOC wine zone, where schist soils and steep terracing define both the landscape and the local economy. The Miradouro de São Paio offers direct views across the river gorge. Lamego's cathedral and its Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios — reached by a 686-step baroque staircase — sit roughly 15 km east, making Resende a quieter base for Douro Valley exploration.
Both municipalities are rural in character, with accommodation ranging from small guesthouses to rural tourism properties. The A24 and A3 motorways connect the wider region to Porto, approximately 80–100 km south-west depending on the municipality.
