About Viana do Castelo (Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate) e Meadela
Viana do Castelo (Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate) e Meadela
Viana do Castelo sits at the mouth of the Lima River in the Minho region of northern Portugal, roughly 70 km north of Braga and 25 km from the Spanish border. The city is defined by two vertical landmarks: the 15th-century Gothic cathedral (Sé) anchoring the historic centre, and the Neo-Byzantine Basilica of Santa Luzia crowning Monte de Santa Luzia at 150 m above sea level — reached by funicular or a steep road, with panoramic views over the river and the Atlantic.
The parishes of Santa Maria Maior, Monserrate, and Meadela form the urban core. Santa Maria Maior holds the medieval grid, the arcaded Praça da República, and the Chafariz fountain built in 1554. Monserrate extends south along the riverfront. Meadela, across the iron bridge attributed to Gustave Eiffel's office, is a quieter residential quarter. Visitors come for the Romaria de Nossa Senhora d'Agonia each August — one of Portugal's largest folk festivals — and for Minho gold filigree jewellery, traditionally worn with the embroidered regional costume. The beach at Praia do Cabedelo, accessible by ferry across the Lima, is less than 2 km from the city centre.
The A28 motorway connects Viana do Castelo to Porto in approximately 1 hour. Regional trains on the Minho line run direct from Porto Campanhã. The city's hotels are concentrated in the historic centre and along the Avenida dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra riverfront promenade.
