About Constanţa
Constanța: Romania's Black Sea Gateway
Constanța is Romania's largest port city and the country's primary Black Sea coast hub, founded as the ancient Greek colony of Tomis around 657 BC. The city sits on a limestone peninsula in southeastern Romania, roughly 225 km east of Bucharest by road. Its 2,600-year history layers Roman ruins, Byzantine remnants, and early 20th-century architecture across a compact historic centre. The Edificiul Roman cu Mozaic — a 4th-century Roman warehouse complex covering 2,000 sq m of mosaic floor — remains one of the largest Roman mosaic sites in Europe.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster in two zones: the Peninsulă (old city) district, within walking distance of the archaeological museum and the Casino building (1910), and the modern Mamaia resort strip, 5 km north along the Black Sea shore. Mamaia stretches 8 km between the sea and Lake Siutghiol and draws summer beach visitors from June through September. The city also serves as a transit base for the Danube Delta, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve accessible via Tulcea, 130 km north.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct trains from Bucharest Nord take roughly 2.5 hours on the intercity service.
- Best season: July and August bring peak beach traffic; May and September offer mild weather with fewer crowds.
- Currency: Romanian leu (RON); card acceptance is widespread in hotels but carry cash for smaller guesthouses.
- Local transport: Shared minibuses (maxi-taxi) connect the peninsula to Mamaia frequently throughout summer.
