About Saint-Louis
Saint-Louis: Former Capital on the Senegal River
Saint-Louis (Saint-Louis du Sénégal) was founded by French traders in 1659 on a narrow island at the mouth of the Senegal River, making it one of the oldest European settlements in sub-Saharan Africa. The colonial island — Île Saint-Louis — was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, recognised for its grid of 19th-century colonial architecture, iron-balconied townhouses, and the landmark Pont Faidherbe, an iron bridge built in 1897. The city sits roughly 270 km north of Dakar along the N2 highway.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three zones: the heritage island itself, the Langue de Barbarie peninsula to the west (closer to the Atlantic beach), and the mainland district of Sor. Island guesthouses occupy restored colonial buildings and offer direct access to the pedestrian streets, jazz bars, and the Saturday fish market at Quai des Pêcheurs. The Parc National des Oiseaux du Djoudj — a key flamingo and pelican reserve — lies 60 km northeast, drawing birdwatchers between November and April.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Shared sept-place taxis from Dakar's Pompiers garage take roughly 4 hours.
- Best season: November to February offers cooler temperatures (20–28 °C) and peak migratory birdwatching.
- Currency: West African CFA franc (XOF); ATMs are limited on the island — carry cash.
- Jazz Festival: The Festival de Jazz de Saint-Louis runs each May, booking hotels weeks in advance.
