About La Digue
La Digue: Granite Shores and Bicycle Lanes
La Digue is the fourth-largest island in the Seychelles, covering roughly 10 sq km in the Indian Ocean. It lies 5 km east of Praslin and is reached by a 15–20-minute ferry crossing. Private cars are largely banned; ox carts and bicycles are the primary means of transport. The resident population numbers around 2,700, keeping the pace deliberately slow.
Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters around La Passe, the main ferry jetty on the western shore, and extends south along the flat central road toward Anse Réunion. Small guesthouses and boutique resorts place guests within easy cycling distance of Anse Source d'Argent, a beach framed by rose-granite boulders inside the L'Union Estate reserve. An estate entrance fee applies.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Daily ferries depart Praslin; Cat Cocos and Inter Island Vessels both operate the route.
- Transport: Bicycle hire is available at the jetty; ox carts handle heavier luggage.
- Best season: April–May and October–November offer calmer seas and lighter winds.
- Cash: Many guesthouses prefer Seychellois rupees; the single ATM is at La Passe.
