About Cape Town

The most convenient bases in Cape Town are the V&A Waterfront, steps from the ferry to Robben Island; the City Bowl and De Waterkant, close to Long Street nightlife and the Table Mountain cable car; and Sea Point along the Atlantic Seaboard for beachfront access. Most visitors stay five to seven nights. Cape Town International Airport is 20 km east, roughly 30 minutes by taxi.

Where to Stay

The V&A Waterfront suits travellers who want harbour views, shopping, and direct boat access to Robben Island — the former prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years. De Waterkant and the broader City Bowl place guests within walking distance of Long Street bars, the Cape Town City Hall (where Mandela gave his first post-release speech in 1990), and the lower cable-car station on Tafelberg Road. Sea Point on the Atlantic Seaboard offers a quieter residential feel with the Sea Point Promenade running 3 km along the ocean. Gardens and Oranjezicht suit those prioritising proximity to Table Mountain's hiking trails and the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in nearby Woodstock.

Getting Around

The MyCiTi Bus Rapid Transit network links the airport to the city centre and runs along the Atlantic Seaboard to Camps Bay. The Blue Train and Rovos Rail depart Cape Town Station for Pretoria. Metered taxis and ride-hailing apps (Bolt, Uber) are the standard option for trips between suburbs. The Cape Winelands — Stellenbosch is 50 km east, Franschhoek 80 km — are best reached by car or organised day-tour.

Practical Tips

  • Season: November to March is peak summer; the Cape Doctor south-easterly wind is strongest December–February.
  • Currency: South African rand (ZAR); ATMs are widely available at malls and the Waterfront.
  • Safety: Stay on lit, populated streets after dark in the CBD; the Waterfront and Sea Point are lower-risk areas at night.
  • Visas: Most EU, US, UK, and Australian passport holders receive a 90-day visitor's permit on arrival.
  • Table Mountain: The aerial cableway is closed on high-wind days — check the official site before booking the ticket.
