About Nottingham Road

Nottingham Road: KwaZulu-Natal Midlands Village on the Meander Route

Nottingham Road sits along the R103 in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, roughly 80 km northwest of Pietermaritzburg and 50 km from Mooi River. The village anchors a stretch of the Midlands Meander, a self-drive arts and crafts route established in 1985 that links studios, potteries, weavers, and cheese farms across the misty grassland plateau. The surrounding countryside sits at around 1,400 m elevation, giving the area cooler summers and cold, often frosty winters that contrast sharply with the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Where to Stay and What Draws Visitors

Most accommodation clusters on farm estates and country lodges rather than in a central urban grid — Rawdons Hotel, open since the 1970s, is the area's longest-running property. Fly-fishing on the Mooi River and its tributaries draws anglers year-round. Hikers use the village as a base for walks into the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg foothills, about 60 km to the west. The Nottingham Road Brewing Company produces ales on-site and serves as a social anchor for the village strip.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The R103 runs directly through the village; the N3 toll highway exit at Nottingham Road is well-signed.
  • Season: April to August brings clear skies but near-freezing nights — pack warm layers.
  • Getting around: A hired car is essential; no scheduled public transport serves the Meander route stops.
