About Mirissa
Mirissa: Sri Lanka's Southern Whale-Watch Coast
Mirissa sits on Sri Lanka's southern tip, roughly 150 km south of Colombo along the A2 coastal highway. The town curves around a compact bay flanked by Parrot Rock — a small outcrop accessible at low tide — and backed by coconut groves. Blue whales and sperm whales pass within 15 km of shore between November and April, making Mirissa one of the most accessible whale-watching points in Asia. Boats depart the fishing harbour from around 06:30.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses line Mirissa Beach Road and the hillside above Secret Beach, a quieter cove 800 m west of the main bay. Budget rooms cluster near the bus stop on Weligama Road, while mid-range properties with sea views occupy the hill slopes. The town hosts roughly 40 properties ranging from simple beach huts to small boutique hotels.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses from Matara (12 km east) run frequently; the nearest train station is Weligama, 6 km away.
- Whale-watching season: Peak sightings run December through March; April marks the tail end.
- Crowds: July–August brings domestic tourism; book accommodation two weeks ahead.
- Surf: A reef break at the western end of the main beach suits intermediate surfers from October onward.
