About Weligama
Weligama: Sri Lanka's South Coast Surf Town
Weligama sits on a broad, sheltered bay in Galle District, roughly 150 km south of Colombo along the Southern Expressway. The town's name translates to "sandy village" in Sinhala, and the gently curving beach lives up to it — a wide stretch of soft sand where waves break consistently enough for beginner surfers yet remain calm enough for swimmers. Taprobane Island, a tiny private islet 100 metres offshore, has anchored the bay's identity since the 1930s when author Paul Bowles stayed there. The stilt fishermen who balance on cross-beams driven into the shallows are among the most photographed subjects on the island's southern coast.
Where to Stay in Weligama
Accommodation clusters along Weligama Bay Road and the quieter lanes running inland toward Kapparathota. Guesthouses and boutique hotels dominate; larger resort properties appear east toward Mirissa, about 5 km away. Surfers base themselves near the western headland for easier paddle-out access, while couples and families often choose properties set back from the main road.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Weligama train station connects to Colombo Fort in roughly 3 hours on the Coastal Line; tuk-tuks reach most hotels in under 10 minutes.
- Surf season: The south coast's prime surf window runs November through April when southwest swells flatten.
- Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR); ATMs are available on Main Street but can run low on weekends.
- Pack: A reef-safe sunscreen — UV index regularly exceeds 10 along the bay.
