About Colombo District
Colombo District: Sri Lanka's Commercial and Coastal Capital
Colombo District sits on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, fronting the Indian Ocean and extending inland across 676 sq km. The district encompasses the capital city proper plus suburban municipalities including Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte (the legislative capital, 8 km east of Fort), and the beach town of Moratuwa to the south. Fort and Pettah form the commercial core — Fort holds the colonial-era Colombo Lighthouse and the World Trade Center twin towers, while Pettah's grid of wholesale bazaars trades in textiles, spices, and electronics daily.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in three corridors. Kollupitiya (Col 3) and Bambalapitiya (Col 4) line Galle Road and suit business travelers needing the central business district within 2 km. Slave Island (Col 2) borders Beira Lake and has seen mid-range development since 2015. Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, 12 km south, offers beachfront guesthouses at lower rates than city-center properties.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Colombo's commuter rail links Fort station to Mount Lavinia in roughly 30 minutes; tuk-tuks cover short hops.
- Airport access: Bandaranaike International Airport is 35 km north in Katunayake; highway transfers take 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
- Currency: Sri Lankan rupee; ATMs are plentiful in Kollupitiya and Pettah.
- Best time to visit: December to March, when the southwest monsoon is dormant.
