About Colombo
Colombo: Port City at the Crossroads of the Indian Ocean
Colombo sits on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, 33 km from Bandaranaike International Airport. The city traces its mercantile roots to Arab traders in the 8th century; the Portuguese fortified it in 1517, and the British rebuilt it as a major colonial port. That layered history shows in the streetscape — Fort and Pettah preserve Dutch-era warehouses and a covered bazaar where spice merchants operate alongside electronics stalls, while Cinnamon Gardens (Ward Place and Rosmead Place) lines wide avenues with colonial bungalows and the National Museum of Colombo, founded 1877.
Where to Stay in Colombo
Hotels cluster in three zones. Kollupitiya (Col 3) and Bambalapitiya (Col 4) place guests within walking distance of Galle Face Green, a 500-metre ocean-front promenade. Fort (Col 1) suits business travellers needing the World Trade Centre and port offices. Borella and Narahenpita offer quieter mid-range options 4–6 km from the waterfront.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: The Colombo Port City expressway connects BIA to Fort in roughly 45 minutes outside peak hours.
- Getting around: Metered tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps (PickMe, Uber) cover most neighbourhoods; the Kelani Valley Line commuter rail links Fort to Maradana and beyond.
- Currency: Sri Lankan rupee (LKR); ATMs are common in Kollupitiya and Fort.
- Climate: May–August brings the southwest monsoon; the drier window runs December–March.
