About Negombo

Negombo: Sri Lanka's Lagoon City and Fishing Coast

Negombo sits on the western coast of Sri Lanka, 37 km north of Colombo and 6 km from Bandaranaike International Airport. The city straddles a narrow strip between the Indian Ocean and a 120 km Dutch-built canal network, constructed in the 17th century when the Netherlands controlled the cinnamon trade. That colonial past is visible in Fort Negombo, the Old Dutch Cemetery, and a concentration of Catholic churches — including St. Mary's Church on Main Street — that earned the city its nickname "Little Rome." The Negombo Fish Market at the lagoon opens before dawn, where traditional oruwa outrigger canoes unload the night's catch alongside larger trawlers.

Where to Stay in Negombo

Most hotels cluster along Lewis Place and Poruthota Road (locally called Ethukala), a 3 km beach strip north of the town centre. Budget guesthouses sit alongside 4-star resorts catering to European package tourists and transit travelers breaking a long-haul journey. The lagoon side offers quieter boutique properties with canal views.

Practical Tips

  • Airport access: The airport is a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride; no need to travel to Colombo for an early departure.
  • Beach swimming: The northern Ethukala stretch is calmer than the town beach; rip currents can be strong near the lagoon mouth.
  • Best season: November to April brings dry, sunny weather; the southwest monsoon arrives in May.
