About Visby

Visby: Medieval Walls and Baltic Light

Visby sits on the west coast of Gotland, Sweden's largest island, roughly 90 km east of the mainland across the Baltic Sea. The city's 3.4 km ring wall, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, encloses one of Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval townscapes. UNESCO added the Hanseatic Town of Visby to its World Heritage List in 1995, citing the intact street plan, merchant warehouses, and 13 ruined church towers — remnants of the city's peak as a Hanseatic trading port before 1361.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster in two zones: inside the ring wall, where converted stone houses and boutique properties sit steps from Stortorget square and the ruins of St. Nikolai Church; and the Norder strand coastal strip north of the wall, where larger hotels face the sea. High season runs mid-June through August, when the Medieval Week festival (first week of August) fills accommodation across the island. Visitors arrive by ferry from Nynäshamn (3 hours) or Oskarshamn (4 hours), or by a 25-minute flight from Stockholm Arlanda.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Gotlandsbåten and Destination Gotland operate daily crossings; book ferries 4–6 weeks ahead in July.
  • Getting around: Visby's walled centre is compact and walkable; rent a bicycle for day trips to cliff stacks called raukar along the coast.
  • Season: Shoulder season (May, September) offers lower rates and uncrowded streets; the wall and ruins are accessible year-round.
