About Schaffhausen

Schaffhausen: Rhine Gateway and Erker Architecture

Schaffhausen sits on the Rhine's north bank in northern Switzerland, 50 km north of Zurich and directly on the Swiss-German border. The city's Altstadt is among the best-preserved medieval centres in the country, distinguished by more than 170 Erker — decorative oriel windows projecting from façades built between the 15th and 17th centuries. Above the rooftops, the circular Munot fortress, completed in 1589, commands views across the river into Baden-Württemberg. IWC Schaffhausen, the precision watchmaker founded here in 1868, adds a layer of industrial heritage rarely found in a city of 36,000 residents.

Rhine Falls and Getting Around

Two kilometres southwest of the Altstadt, Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) drops 23 metres across a 150-metre-wide basalt ledge — the largest waterfall in Europe by flow volume, peaking in June and July. Boats from Schloss Laufen and Schloss Wörth reach a rock platform at the falls' centre. Schaffhausen Hauptbahnhof connects to Zurich HB in roughly 40 minutes by direct train; Neuhausen am Rheinfall station, four minutes further, is the closest stop to the falls.

Practical Tips

  • Timing: Water volume is highest June–July; October brings autumn colour around the gorge.
  • Altstadt: The medieval core is compact and walkable from any central hotel.
  • IWC Museum: Allow at least one hour for the watch museum on Baumgartenstrasse.
  • Border crossings: Carry a passport or EU ID — Germany is minutes away by foot or bus.
