About Tainan

Tainan: Taiwan's Oldest Capital and Temple City

Founded as a Dutch trading post in 1624 and later the Qing-era capital of Taiwan, Tainan holds more registered historic monuments than any other Taiwanese city. The Anping District — built around Fort Zeelandia, completed in 1634 — anchors the western waterfront, while the city's dense temple network, including Chihkan Tower (1653) and over 1,600 active shrines, draws both pilgrims and historians. Street food culture in Tainan is widely regarded as the most developed in Taiwan: Shennong Street and the lanes around Chikan are lined with century-old snack stalls serving milkfish congee, coffin bread, and tainan-style beef soup.

Where to Stay in Tainan

Most hotels concentrate in the East District near Tainan Train Station, within walking distance of Confucius Temple (1665) and the Flower Night Market, which opens Thursdays and Sundays. The West Central District offers smaller guesthouses closer to the historic core.
