About Khujand
Khujand: Alexandria the Farthest on the Syr Darya
Khujand sits on the banks of the Syr Darya river in the Fergana Valley, roughly 200 km north of Dushanbe across the Anzob Pass. Founded by Alexander the Great around 329 BC as Alexandria Eschate — Alexandria the Farthest — it ranks among Central Asia's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The 2,500-year-old Khujand Fortress, reconstructed and housing the Museum of Archaeology and Fortification, anchors the old city alongside the sprawling Panjshanbe Bazaar, one of the largest covered markets in Tajikistan, where traders sell dried fruit, spices, and silk alongside household goods.
Where to Stay in Khujand
Most hotels concentrate near Lenin Square and along Ismoil Somoni Street in the city centre, placing guests within walking distance of the bazaar and fortress. The Syr Darya embankment offers a quieter riverside strip with guesthouses favored by independent travelers. Khujand serves as the gateway to the Fergana Valley and receives visitors en route to Istaravshan (90 km south) and the Uzbek border crossings at Oybek and Konibodom.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Khujand Airport (LBD) connects to Moscow, Istanbul, and Dubai; the road from Dushanbe takes 4–5 hours via the Anzob Tunnel.
- Currency: Tajikistani somoni; carry cash as card acceptance is limited outside larger hotels.
- Climate: Summers reach 38 °C; spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are most comfortable for sightseeing.
