About Manyara

Manyara: Gateway to the Great Rift Valley

Manyara sits at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment in northern Tanzania, roughly 126 km southwest of Arusha along the A104 highway. The town takes its name from Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake whose shores support one of East Africa's densest concentrations of flamingos and the tree-climbing lions that made the park famous after David Attenborough filmed them in the 1960s. Lake Manyara National Park, established in 1960, covers 648 km² and serves as the first major stop on Tanzania's northern safari circuit — positioned between Arusha and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Where to Stay

Accommodation ranges from mid-range lodges along the escarpment rim to tented camps inside the park buffer zone. Karatu, 75 km further west, offers budget options for travelers combining Manyara with Ngorongoro. Most hotels in Manyara town cluster near the main gate road and cater to one- or two-night stopovers rather than extended stays.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Shared dala-dala buses run from Arusha daily; the journey takes approximately 2.5 hours.
  • Best season: July–October for dry-season game viewing; February–March for migratory birds including thousands of lesser flamingos.
  • Park fees: USD 45 per person per day (2024 Tanzania National Parks rate) — confirm current tariffs at the gate.
  • Altitude: The escarpment rises to around 1,800 m; pack a light layer for evenings.
